My Account for Individuals
If you have a SIN then you have an account on the CRA website that you can register for access, so that you can login anytime and see the status of your tax situation and returns with the CRA.
My Account is a secure portal that lets you view your personal income tax and benefit information and manage your tax affairs online. If you move, change mailing, email, phone or banking (Direct Deposit) info, then you must change these details yourself (your representative cannot do it for you) either on the phone with the CRA or online in My Account.
Changing these details with other government agencies does not automatically translate to the CRA My Account.
My Account For Individuals can be accessed here, and if you’re having a hard time with getting access to it, you can also phone the CRA at 1 (800) 959-8281.
Before you can register for My Account, you must have filed your income tax and benefit return for the current tax year or the previous one.
You will be asked for some detailed information on your most recently filed tax return, usually it will be obvious on the executive summary page (often line 15000 Net Income amount claimed).
You’ll want to ensure you get access well in advance of actually needing information, because it can take 2 up to weeks to complete.
Once you have access, you can use this online portal to upload applications for Taxpayer Relief Request, Voluntary Disclosures Program, and to make adjustment requests to previously filed tax returns. (If you forgot to claim a deduction, or income source, be prepared to upload/send the CRA documentation to prove your claims’ legitimacy > the CRA requires documented proof to approve almost all adjustment requests.
My Business Account
If you’re self-employed and registered for HST, you’ll also want to ensure you have access to your My Business Account online. Business owners (including partners, directors, and officers) can access their GST/HST, payroll, corporation income taxes, excise taxes, excise duties and other levies accounts online. What can I do on my Business account?
More information on the registration process can be found here.
Times when you’ll want access to information & documentation that’s in your account:
• Reading CRA mail including your Notice of Assessment (the letter sent to acknowledge receipt and processing of your tax return year, and any changes or important info to note) and all other account communications
• Following up on your balance owing to CRA, 3-6 months after filing 5-10 years of returns
• Following up on anticipated refunds, or benefits > if they haven’t arrived in 5-10 days (filed prior to deadline), then there’s likely a reason why the CRA is holding on to your payment; usually they’ve requested some details from you and are awaiting your reply.
• Applying for a new apartment lease, especially if self-employed (Proof of Income statements)
• Applying for a new home mortgage or refinanced mortgage
• Applying for a business loan, grant, and other financial applications
• Applying for government support programs
• Applying for student loans
• Applying for bankruptcy status or a consumer proposal
• Applying to have your approved Disability Tax Credit applied to prior years (if not done automatically)
Most financial applications will want to see your most recent year (or two) Notice of Assessment, which is the CRA giving a current status of your details for that year.
If you need me to get documentation or information for you, my fees start at $75 minimum (continue at $150/hour), and I need at least 7 days to get the documentation to you or RUSH FEES will apply.
